Savegre Mountain Lodge is the ideal spot to explore the high elevation habitats in Costa Rica. Hosted by the Chacón Zúñiga
Family you will be able to experience all the hospitality of these pioneers who discovered this valley in 1954 and settled in by 1955.
Efraín Chacón and his family develop their interest for nature early enough allowing them to preserve 70% of their 400 hectares of property.
An extensive trail system reveals all this ancient tropical cloud forest.
The grounds of the hotel are quite entertaining, hummingbird feeders, beautiful gardens, and the charming Savegre River attract a great number of bird species around the facilities. The lodge is privileged to be submerged in the Talamanca Mountain Range into a pristine high elevation oak forest as well as proximities of Sub-Alpine Rain Paramo (over 10,000 feet) making this area a very unique birding spot to observe many species found only in the highlands of Costa Rica and the very western part of Chiriquí in Panamá. The hotel is located about 2 hours by car South from San José, at km 80 on Highway 2 a detour to your right drops 9 km into the San Gerardo de Dota Valley, a beautiful drive, the last 9 km require low gear! Savegre Mountain Hotel offers standard rooms and junior suites, all with private bath and hot water, fireplace or heater. The new Junior Suites are beautiful rooms that really make your stay very special, the Standard rooms configured in rows are simpler, but well maintained and comfortable. All rooms are nicely located in the property, either facing gardens or more forested areas. The restaurant called "Las Bromelias" is great, most of the time serving great buffets and in some occasions serving "A la cart" (this basically depends on the number of guests staying at the lodge) Multiple choices for main course, salads, and deserts; as well as a good selection of wines are available. San Gerardo de Dota is located at an average elevation of 7200 feet (2,200 m), you can expect nice cool temperatures through the day (although sunny days can also be very warm near noon time), but at night temperatures can even drop to 38 F degrees, specially from January to mid March when some nights can be chilly. The valley is just off the continental divide on the Pacific side, which makes its weather quite unpredictable sometimes, you can get Pacific influence with clouds raising from the low valleys and coast, and very often as winds from the Caribbean side blow into Costa Rica they finally reach the mountains and push some clouds over the divide creating very consistent mist or rain. Make sure you bring a little umbrella, poncho, or rain jacket, even if you are coming in the dry months. A typical question is about water, the Savegre Lodge offers water from their very own mountain spring and it is safe to drink. Internet access is available at reception, as well as international phone service. A small souvenir shop next to reception is available, and laundry service can be requested too, ask at reception. The resident guides of Savegre Lodge are quite skilled, as members of the family they have lived here for years and really know the area well. Their understanding of the surrounding habitats and knowledge of bird calls, and their endless enthusiasm come together to provide you with a fantastic time. San Gerardo de Dota is a paradise for nature lovers and birders. |
